Sadly, not a kitchen on a desert island, however, an Island Kitchen may well be the answer to your dreams – at least when it comes to choosing the ideal kitchen for you!
Kitchen islands come in all shapes and sizes, giving you flexibility to make it work in the intended space, and to fulfil the needs of your family.
The kitchen island creates a focal point for the kitchen. It’s a key feature, an eye-catching and multi-functional unit that stands in its own space, and can be accessed on all sides.
Planning a kitchen with an island is exciting! But before you go all in, some key considerations can help you create a functional and beautiful space.
Here are some important things to think about:
Does your kitchen have the capacity?
Kitchen islands need adequate clearance (ideally 36-48 inches) around all sides for comfortable movement. Measure carefully and ensure doorways and walkways won’t be blocked.
Island size matters
Consider your needs and space limitations. Bigger isn’t always better. Aim for a size that provides ample work surface while maintaining comfortable traffic flow.
Shape it up!
Rectangular is classic, but square, L-shaped, or even curved islands can be great depending on your layout and preferences.
What’s the island’s purpose?
Will it be a food prep zone, a breakfast bar, or both?
Tailor your layout to your intended use. If it’s for food prep alone, you probably won’t need stools or a worktop overhang, but if you want to use it, or part of it, as a breakfast bar then you will need to consider seating, space and safety. For example, you probably won’t want to be putting a hob on the kitchen island if it’s to be used as a seated social space.
Create an ergonomic workflow
The ‘Work Triangle’ concept positions the three main work zones – the sink, hob/cooker and fridge in a triangular layout. Ideally the distance between these points should be neither too close nor too far, minimising unnecessary steps, twisting and backtracking.
With a kitchen island design, you may like consider putting the sink or the hob in the island which will help to create the ergonomic workflow.
Appliance integration
Do you want the sink, hob, or dishwasher incorporated into the island?
Consider plumbing and ventilation needs, safety clearances, and extractor fan capacity.
There is some amazing appliance technology on the market today such as downdraft and ventilator hobs, and smart fridges and ovens. We can negotiate great prices from leading brands such as Neff, AEG, Bora, Bosch. Check out our Appliances page for further information >>
Storage is key!
Utilise drawers, cabinets, and even open shelves to maximise storage potential. Think about what you need easily accessible and plan accordingly.
New for 2024, Nobilia have created some innovative storage solutions that will be perfect for your island kitchen, such as Design Shelves and Display Storage Cases. Check out this blog for more information
Seating arrangements
If including seating, consider bar stools or regular chairs, depending on your desired formality and space constraints. Ensure comfortable legroom and knee clearance and that there is enough space to move around when people are seated.
Accessibility for all
If you have mobility limitations, plan for lower countertops, accessible storage, and ample turning space.
Worktop material
There are some truly stunning worktops on the market with a vast range of colours and textures. You can choose from standard laminate, compact laminate, natural wood, Corian, quartz, granite, ultra-tough ceramic, and even glass! Most are available in a range of depths, often down to 20mm but some are as thin as 12mm (compact laminate) and glass of course, is even thinner. Check out the GKS range of worktops >>
Lighting
Good lighting is crucial for safe and efficient food preparation. Task lighting under cabinets and around the sink can help improve visibility for chopping and cleaning.
Electrical sockets
Don’t skimp on sockets! Have them conveniently placed around the island for appliances and charging devices.
